An African 19th c. Dan mask
An impressive ritual mask from the Dan tribe, originating from Liberia in West Africa, dating to the 19th century. The shape is elongated and slightly oval, featuring prominently large oval eye openings and strict geometric features.
It stands out for the subtle perforations that decorate the eye area and cheeks, filled with white pigment, adding intensity and a sacred character to the mask’s expression.
The mouth is open and oval-shaped, with inlaid real teeth (possibly from a species of monkey), which contribute to the vivid expressiveness of the piece.
Traces of wear on the wood and mounting holes indicate long-term ritual use, likely in initiation dances, rites of passage, or other sacred ceremonies.
