A 19th-century Indian octagonal chess table from the Ohri Brothers workshop
Indian octagonal side table made of Indian rosewood (Shisham wood), richly inlaid with ivory and ebony, crafted by the Ohri Brothers workshop.
The tabletop features a geometric checkerboard composition, framed by intricate floral and linear motifs characteristic of the production of the Hoshiarpur region, renowned for its high-quality inlay technique (primarily using ivory, ebony, and other materials).
The folding octagonal base, which detaches from the top and is also decorated with inlay, reflects a strong influence from “Muslim” or “Moorish” styles, which enjoyed great popularity in 19th-century Europe.
The Ohri Brothers workshop is a representative example of the decorative opulence of Anglo-Indian furniture-making in the late 19th century.
A paper label bearing the workshop’s mark is preserved on the interior.
India, Hoshiarpur, late 19th century.
