An African Bembe people ”Kalunga” sculpture
An African two-faced wooden statuette of the Bembe tribe from the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, representing the water spirit Kalunga.
In the Bembe, but also Lega cultures, Kalunga is often a deity or spirit associated with the sea and the underwater world, which is considered the realm of ancestors and spirits, constituting a bridge between the living and the dead.
These statuettes were used in rituals for protection and spiritual guidance.
